Republic, Lost, How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It

Creator: Lawrence Lessig | Political Science - 2011-10-05

In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Publisher: Hachette Digital, Inc.

About this book
In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government-driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission-trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature. With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic-and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left-Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted-but redeemable-representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness. While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Hidden Order, A Thriller

Creator: Brad Thor | Fiction - 2013-07-09

This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

About this book
#1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor returns with his hottest and most action-packed thriller yet! And don’t miss FREE FALL: A Prelude to Hidden Order, available for free download now!The most secretive organization in America operates without any accountability to the American people. Hiding in the shadows, pretending to be part of the United States government, its power is beyond measure. Control of this organization has just been lost and the future of the nation thrust into peril. When the five candidates being considered to head this mysterious agency suddenly go missing, covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath is summoned to Washington and set loose on the most dangerous chase ever to playout on American soil. But as the candidates begin turning up murdered, the chase becomes an all-too-public spectacle, with every indicator suggesting that the plot has its roots in a shadowy American cabal founded in the 1700s. With the United States on the verge of collapse, Harvath must untangle a web of conspiracy centuries in the making and head off the greatest threat America has ever seen. This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

Updated software - no new tricks, but no hidden fees this year either

The software is about the same as it has been in years' past. And, as in years' past, if you have not strictly set up your Quicken categories the way TurboTax expects to see them, you will experience some incorrect entries when you import from Quicken. Similarly, TurboTax does a pitiful job importing stock option trades from Quicken, primarily using the real Date Acquired info as the Date Sold and then leaving the Date Acquired field blank, so you have to manually go in and change these 2 dates for each of your transactions. Still, it eventually gets the job done and is much easier than trying to fill out paper forms. And I guess I have just become numb to the cutesy "We just saved you $7 in taxes!" gibberish and the plugs to upgrade to a more expensive version every time you have a tax circumstance that would prompt Intuit to want you to upgrade. As an aside, I too would like to know how two reviewers who were Intuit beta testers came up with identically worded phrases... 3/5 G. My Past Issues w/ TurboTax - - Creeping State Prices

I've been using TT since it was released in DOS, and as part of the installed base, have stuck with it since.Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time. The Question & Answer format continues, and it seems to be a good approach to cover your tax situation. It allows you to "explore on your own" any topic. The sequencing is unchanged -- personal info, income, deductions & credits, and error checking. My advance edition software is really just a template to carry over your previous data from the 2009 filings and an update checker - - as of now (01/10/2011), my tax reforming forms won't arrive until end of January and many IRS still need to be released as 2010 versions. Probably the best there is - but room for improvement

This review is for TuboTax 2010 Deluxe for Federal Returns. Fortunately I live in Texas and there is no state income tax so I don't have to worry about the state portion.TurboTax has had its share of issues but I came back to it because it does seem to be the best there is, but I'm knocking off a star because of the history of issues I've had with the program in previous years (like it not calculating tax correctly until I deleted some assets and then re-entered them). However, I was a little shocked to read that it requires 500MB of HD space PLUS up to 620MB more if Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed (Mac is only 255MB). Wow! That could be over 1GB to do taxes. How inefficient we have become!Fortunately the system requirements says it works on 64-bit systems, but doesn't specifically mention Windows 7 64-bit, but if it works with Vista 64-bit then it should work with Windows 7 64-bit.I may be working with this to help estimate my 2010 taxes... 4/5 Lantana Al (DFW, TX) - See all my reviews, January 5, 2011

Like buying a Business Class seat and finding yourself in Coach

Let me join the chorus of long-time customers who are absolutely furious with Intuit for downgrading the capabilities of TurboTax Deluxe so that it can no longer do what it has done for many years - including Schedules D and C. The product instead informs me that I require Home & Business (which I never needed before) and I must pay another $40.Look. If you want to change product features, Intuit, that is your right. But to give a lesser product the exact same name as a previous, more capable product is just Evil. This is just clueless about the concept of serving your customers. If an airline rebranded their economy/coach seats as "Business Class", do you think people would complain if they bought what they thought was a larger, business class seat and found themselves in coach - and not even economy plus?If you ordered a pick-up truck and discovered that there was no truck bed because the manufacturer now considered that as non-standard... 1/5 Karl (Bozeman, MT USA) - See all my reviews, December 17, 2014

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - INTUIT IS TRYING TO RIP US OFF

Don't buy this if you are a long time user of TT. I have used TT for 20 years at least and I can honestly say I will be switching to anything other than TT. Why? Well for years I have used the Deluxe version which has always included the Schedule D and Schedule C. This year the Deluxe version does NOT include the Schedule D and only includes the Schedule C-EZ. If you want the same functionality this year as in the past you need to by the Premier version which is $30.00 more. Intuit will soon discover their ploy to increase revenue through this backhanded effort will only increase revenues for H&R Block and other software venders as people leave this expensive product behind. If you are a longtime user, or even if you are new to the tax software arena, don't buy this product until Intuit reconsiders it's actions. If I could I would give this zero stars. This is another example of Intuit trying to mug it's customer base (Quicken loss of... 1/5 Vinnie - See all my reviews, November 30, 2014

TT Deluxe 2014 - Disappointing Program Changes

Have used Turbotax from its beginning. It has always been the market dominant and a very fine product, until 2014. I purchased TT Deluxe w. State Return at Staples 11/26 so I could begin my year end tax planning. The cost was listed at $89.95 less a $30 Staples instant rebate, so final price was fine. I read the different version features and figured the Deluxe version still was my most reasonable choice, since my situation hadn't changed from previous years. The program installed without any problem. So I began entering estimated information. Surrprise! When I tried to enter some estate trust income in the K1 form, a script type message appeared that stated Deluxe had been changed and I needed to pay $30 upgrade fee for Premier version! First thought, I've been hacked or this is a phishing scam. So I called TT support and the associate listened to my plea and outrage, and was told I had to pay the fee or the program would not accept the K1 info. and print a filing return... 1/5 philly-elf "philly-elf" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe 2014 Fed + State + Fed Efile Tax Software + Refund Bonus Offer (CD-ROM) Have used Turbotax from its beginning. Indispensable Tool -- Simplifies a Complex Annual Task

I used this product since 1988 (DOS, 5.25" floppies), and wouldn't want to give it up. I've been buying it through my FI which has a partnership discount rather than from a re-seller like Amazon.com & Costco. Right now, what you get is a TurboTax "shell" to transfer last year's "info data" to the current year, and forms which act as placeholders until finalized forms are released by the IRS. The State forms are preliminary and incomplete, and they are last to be released by TurboTax, because typically, State tax codes are based off of what the Feds do. Also, at this time, W-2's, 1099's, 1098's, etc. haven't been released, and although you can backfill them from all your 12/31/2012 statements, it reduces the ease you are trying to achieve. Also, wait until your IRS report forms are received, then do an online software update.TurboTax evolved to a Q&A type format which remains the user interface for the past decade or so, grouping similar topics together like "Income",... 4/5 Sui Lin Chee "Sui Lin Chee" (Silicon Valley, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Premier Federal + E-File + State 2012 [Old Version] (Software) I used this product since 1988 (DOS, 5.25" floppies), and wouldn't want to give it up. Great product - but, for first time users it take a bit more time

I have been using TurboTax for years. The transfer of data from prior years is fast and easy. I use it when it first comes out each year to do some quick tax calculations to plan my year end transactions. For planning purposes where one does not have all the various forms from financial institutions, one must force the program to ignore certain missing information, or go back to the paper copies of the various forms received from those institutions in prior years. These problems, of course, go away when one is doing the actual tax return, since those forms for the current year would be at hand. This is only a problem when doing early estimates without the various forms.I like that the program is constantly updated as one approaches the actual filing time, so that everything is current and up to date at the time of filing.A good solid product that gets better each year.Be sure to buy the level of Turbo Tax that you need for your own particular... 5/5 W. Terrible for income property (Premiere Edition)

I have used TT for many years. Last year I purchased the premier edition because I bought a rental property. I was hoping the wizard would walk me through all the steps for determining what is an expense and what is depreciable, specifically around HUD statement items. WRONG! You would think a key element of the wizard would be to walk the user through such an important document for preparing taxes. There is no intelligence built into the wizard - they just provide a few fields for you to input data but do not communicate the meaning and impact and what should qualify. It is up to you to discover that on your own. I was more than extremely disappointed, and it took me about 3 weeks to research various related items and then figure out how to input them into the right place in the wizard. VERY BAD INTERFACE SINCE THE PRODUCT IS MARKETED TO WALK YOU THROUGH EVERYTHING. 0 4/5 Lucy - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + E-File + State 2012 for PC [Old Version] (Software Download) I just finished my taxes. One thing I will suggest for those having issues downloading state for extra $39.99 is to update state software, sign out of turbo tax and sign back in. State will be downloaded at no additional cost other than to e file state for $19.99. Those that claim its $19.99 plus $29.99 processing fee to e file state are not mentioning that the $29.99 processing fee is only if you want them to deduct the $19.99 directly from your return. You can pay by credit card to e file and it will only cost $19.99, no processing fee. So my federal and state taxes are completed and both filed electronically for a total of $60. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 3, 2013

UPDATE: 03/21/13 - Amazon has updated the description

UPDATE: 03/21/13Amazon and Intuit have updated the product page with several notes and bullet points that more clearly explain exactly which services this piece of software offers and which cost extra. The included services are: federal prep and e-file and state prep, but state e-file is extra. The entire purpose of this review was to explain the fact that for most people, there would be an additional cost should they want to file things electronically for both the federal and state returns. This was because the product listing's main description never listed out that the state e-file was not included in the price. It was only included as very tiny text at the very bottom of the description and was very easy to miss. I appreciate that Intuit and Amazon have updated this listing accordingly. The software itself is easy to use and since everything is filed electronically, you usually get your return pretty quickly. It also looks through a lot of deductions to make sure... 4/5 Dan (Lincoln, NE United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Still the best

TurboTax is the oldest, and IMO, still the best. Make sure you get the version that you need: this one is Federal only, plus a paid-in-advance efile (eFile $9.95 cost is charged by the IRS unless you buy it as part of a tax software package). You can purchase a State component separately, but if you require a State submission it's a better deal if you buy the "Federal+State" as a package.BTW, I also tried the "H&R Block TaxAct" software side by side. It is cheaper by $10 and it works pretty well (not quite as intuitive as TurboTx, I think). However, although they advertise that it "imports info from TurboTax", I found that not to be the case. It does import simple info like names, addresses etc, but in my case it did not import the complicated tax-related stuff like depreciation schedules, home-office specifications, etc etc. Unless you have a fairly simple return (no home office, small business, business use of a car, etc), switching may not be a good idea unless... 4/5 brownil "brownil" (wimberley, tx USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File 2010 [Download] [OLD VERSION] (Software Download) TurboTax is the oldest, and IMO, still the best. Turbo Tax arrogance

0 2/5 rick - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File 2010 [Download] [OLD VERSION] (Software Download) If you purchase a Turbo Tax product from any one other vendor than the Turbo Tax web site, you are required to register the product every time you use it. You can click "skip" on the registration screen, which appears every time you open the software, however you then will not receive updates. When I confronted Turbo Tax customer support about this, they finally relented and allowed me to download the product from their website. In my experience, this type of arrogant disregard for customer convenience is typical of Intuit. I will not be using their products in the future. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 11, 2011

    Issues, but Not With Amazon

I downloaded this product last night. It was by and far the best price I could find. Intuit doesn't even offer "Federal Only - Download/CD" on their web site. According to Intuit help, you have to call them on the phone for this product and then it will set you back $44.95. After the download my troubles began. My primary machine is a Windows 7 Ultimate computer. The installer sensed that I had a previous version of Turbo Tax installed and, instead of trying to install in the Program Files folder, offered the correct location... but the name was something I wanted to change. They used a default name of "Deluxe 2010", which could be confusing when you use Quicken Deluxe 2010 as I do. So I tried to change the name. The installer died with no error message at all.I tried to do the install on my backup machine which is a Vista machine with the same error. This morning I tried to install on my laptop, and it worked perfectly. The laptop is Windows XP SP3. So I went... 4/5 J.R. (Florida) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 0 1/5 Nancy D Crooks - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Basic 2014 Fed + Fed Efile Tax Software + Refund Bonus Offer (Software Download) I've used TT Deluxe since 1995 and recommended it to anyone wanting an easy way to file they're taxes. After moving to a state that has no state income tax I switched to TT Basic and had the same great program as TT Deluxe. So this year I go to Amazon to buy my TT Basic and find out it no longer has schedule D. No problem I'll bite the bullet and upgrade to TT Deluxe and then find out it doesn't have schedule D either and I must upgrade to TT Premier. Doing some shopping around I find out H&R Block has a Deluxe version that has a schedule D. Bye, Bye Turbotax. I'm also a long time Quicken user and now looking to switch my money management software in the event Intuit makes the same business decision with Quicken. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 27, 2014

Product Ruined, no longer worth its cheap price

I have been using TurboTax BASIC to do my taxes for about 20 years, so I had no reason to question it would not meet my needs this year, especially since I am now retired and no longer own a home business. Wrong! The product no longer supports form 1040, only form 1040EZ. Who needs tax software to file form 1040EZ? What do they think the EZ stands for?If they wanted a cheap product only for 1040EZ why didn't they just call it Intuit TurboTax EZ 2014? And leave the product called BASIC still capable of doing at least the core of what it has always done and has served me well for decades, for the market that can not use EZ but doesn't need the extra stuff in DELUXE, i.e., the market that has been served nicely by the BASIC product for decades. If you need to raise the price be honest and just raise the price. Don't insult us by lessening the value of the product, like the one pound bag of potato chips that is now only 10.5 ounces. We really are not that stupid. Time to... 1/5 K. Langeneckert (St. Louis, MO USA) - See all my reviews, December 28, 2014

How to avoid the TurboTax ripoff

0 1/5 MSY (Seattle) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Basic 2014 Fed + Fed Efile Tax Software + Refund Bonus Offer (Software Download) Turbo Tax has pulled a fast one. Last year they charged 30 bucks for their Basic, which did everything most taxpayers need. This year they cut the price of their Basic to 15 bucks, but they made this version useless for most taxpayers, who will now require TT's 50- or 70-buck upgrade. There's an easy way to avoid this rip-off. I just bought H&R Block's Basic version for 20 bucks, and it appears to do everything TT Basic did in prior years. All the forms are included. Also, it imports your 2013 data from your old TT file. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 9, 2014
