Republic, Lost, How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It

Creator: Lawrence Lessig | Political Science - 2011-10-05

In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Publisher: Hachette Digital, Inc.

About this book
In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government-driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission-trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature. With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic-and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left-Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted-but redeemable-representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness. While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Hidden Order, A Thriller

Creator: Brad Thor | Fiction - 2013-07-09

This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

About this book
#1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor returns with his hottest and most action-packed thriller yet! And don’t miss FREE FALL: A Prelude to Hidden Order, available for free download now!The most secretive organization in America operates without any accountability to the American people. Hiding in the shadows, pretending to be part of the United States government, its power is beyond measure. Control of this organization has just been lost and the future of the nation thrust into peril. When the five candidates being considered to head this mysterious agency suddenly go missing, covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath is summoned to Washington and set loose on the most dangerous chase ever to playout on American soil. But as the candidates begin turning up murdered, the chase becomes an all-too-public spectacle, with every indicator suggesting that the plot has its roots in a shadowy American cabal founded in the 1700s. With the United States on the verge of collapse, Harvath must untangle a web of conspiracy centuries in the making and head off the greatest threat America has ever seen. This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

    worked fine for me

I just downloaded TT Deluxe, and did my usual preliminary tax computation for 2011. (I'm using Windows 7, on a pretty fast computer, with all Windows updates current.)I had no problems with the program. It installed with no problems, checked for updates (none), found various copies of my 2010 tax file, allowed me to select one of them. I quickly reviewed the imported 2010 info, and it all looked correct.I don't use the "import from Quicken" feature, because I find that it sometimes causes problems. Instead, I create reports in Q that I export in TXF format, which I can then import into TT. This worked fine. I couldn't download my brokerage & mutual fund information yet, obviously, since that will not be available until late Jan or early Feb. Same with the W2 info. Instead I entered some info based on my records, just to go through the preliminary calculation. Everything worked as expected. BUT note that some forms (e.g., Sch D) aren't finalized yet,... 4/5 CS (MA, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + E-file + State 2011 [Old Version] (CD-ROM) I just downloaded TT Deluxe, and did my usual preliminary tax computation for 2011. HOLD OFF

Let me first say that I have always used Turbo Tax and will continue to do so. However, I bought the 2011 yesterday and installed it on my Mac, running Lion. The install was fine, BUT I was then asked if I wanted to install 3 updates (a never ending, but necessary function for tax software). I agreed and after being patient, as requested by the update, for over 30 minutes, I realized that the install had frozen my computer and I had to Force Quit my Mac. Thinking that this was just a fluke, I tried it again and the same thing happened during the install, including the Force Quit. I then decided to reinstall Turbo Tax and not agree to the update. It worked, but it couldn't find the Turbo Tax 2010 automatically and I had to find it myself for this function to work. Hopefully, for 2011, the ability to password protect my return will work since, for whatever reason, the password protect doesn't work on Mac - this was confirmed by Turbo Tax Support last year.My... 3/5 AllenF6868 - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + E-file + State 2011 [Old Version] (CD-ROM) Let me first say that I have always used Turbo Tax and will continue to do so. Don't try to switch from another program

I have used H&R Block tax software for years, started when it was affiliated with MS Money and was using Money. I switched to Quicken 2 yrs ago and decided to try TurboTax this year. Big mistake! They say you can transfer last yrs return from H&R Block and several other software programs. Don't believe them, unless you had a simple return with no investment, interest income, itemized deductions etc. It does not work and the software crashes.I did transfer my daughter's file with no problem but her's is only income from salary with a std ded. A more complicated return/file does not transfer.I tried contacting support via online chat and phone six times with no solution, just a lot of meaningless talk. Suggestions like, restart your computer, reinstall the software, the datafile must be corrupted, we don't support transferring data from other software, etc. They have no clue. Finally bought H&R Block software, loaded last yrs datafile with no problem... 1/5 MemphisFlyFisher (Memphis, TN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 0 1/5 Nancy D Crooks - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Basic 2014 Fed + Fed Efile Tax Software + Refund Bonus Offer (Software Download) I've used TT Deluxe since 1995 and recommended it to anyone wanting an easy way to file they're taxes. After moving to a state that has no state income tax I switched to TT Basic and had the same great program as TT Deluxe. So this year I go to Amazon to buy my TT Basic and find out it no longer has schedule D. No problem I'll bite the bullet and upgrade to TT Deluxe and then find out it doesn't have schedule D either and I must upgrade to TT Premier. Doing some shopping around I find out H&R Block has a Deluxe version that has a schedule D. Bye, Bye Turbotax. I'm also a long time Quicken user and now looking to switch my money management software in the event Intuit makes the same business decision with Quicken. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 27, 2014

How to avoid the TurboTax ripoff

0 1/5 MSY (Seattle) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Basic 2014 Fed + Fed Efile Tax Software + Refund Bonus Offer (Software Download) Turbo Tax has pulled a fast one. Last year they charged 30 bucks for their Basic, which did everything most taxpayers need. This year they cut the price of their Basic to 15 bucks, but they made this version useless for most taxpayers, who will now require TT's 50- or 70-buck upgrade. There's an easy way to avoid this rip-off. I just bought H&R Block's Basic version for 20 bucks, and it appears to do everything TT Basic did in prior years. All the forms are included. Also, it imports your 2013 data from your old TT file. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 9, 2014

Product Ruined, no longer worth its cheap price

I have been using TurboTax BASIC to do my taxes for about 20 years, so I had no reason to question it would not meet my needs this year, especially since I am now retired and no longer own a home business. Wrong! The product no longer supports form 1040, only form 1040EZ. Who needs tax software to file form 1040EZ? What do they think the EZ stands for?If they wanted a cheap product only for 1040EZ why didn't they just call it Intuit TurboTax EZ 2014? And leave the product called BASIC still capable of doing at least the core of what it has always done and has served me well for decades, for the market that can not use EZ but doesn't need the extra stuff in DELUXE, i.e., the market that has been served nicely by the BASIC product for decades. If you need to raise the price be honest and just raise the price. Don't insult us by lessening the value of the product, like the one pound bag of potato chips that is now only 10.5 ounces. We really are not that stupid. Time to... 1/5 K. Langeneckert (St. Louis, MO USA) - See all my reviews, December 28, 2014

One state download/one state prep problem seems to be fixed!

I have always used turbotax but this year but they changed their pricing. The package says one free state download. True, you can download one state of your choice. However, you only get to prepare one state only. All additional state preparations are at $39 via download of even the same state. Thus for example, you have two family members living in California. The first person downloads the free California state download. If the second family member, who also needs to file the California state return, the second family member needs to pay $39 to turbotax via the software, to prepare the second state return, again, even if it is the same state. Contacted turbotax and it took several tries until they stated that this is the case. The first few times they would not confirm it but rather dodge the question and give an ambiguous answer, not admitting to the change.1/16/10 update: after installing an online software update yesterday, it seems that turbotax has now... 4/5 AnthonyCA - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + eFile + State 2009 (CD-ROM) I have always used turbotax but this year but they changed their pricing. Nothing this complex is perfect

    0 4/5 Bob M, December 7, 2009

    Masters of revenue maximization

I have used TT for years and have no real complaints about the program itself, despite some minor flaws. However, last year I switched to the other brand as the marketing mavens at Intuit decided to try to milk the cow further by charging for printing additional returns (a move they quickly reversed after they were publicly flogged for it). Back to TT this year - our family has a sole proprietor business and each time I visit Schedule C, I have to answer "No, I do not want to upgrade to TurboTax Home & Business for $40" since I can do everything I need to with TT Home Deluxe. (And "No, I do not want to upgrade to Premier" every time I get to the Investments section either.) However, with a death in our family, I now need to also file a return for a decedent's estate, which is form 1041. Guess what? That is not included in any TurboTax Home product, including Home & Business. That form, which has line items virtually identical to the standard 1040, is only found in TurboTax... 3/5 Tony Smith (Jefferson City, MO USA) - See all my reviews, January 9, 2010

0 4/5 Lucy - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + E-File + State 2012 for PC [Old Version] (Software Download) I just finished my taxes. One thing I will suggest for those having issues downloading state for extra $39.99 is to update state software, sign out of turbo tax and sign back in. State will be downloaded at no additional cost other than to e file state for $19.99. Those that claim its $19.99 plus $29.99 processing fee to e file state are not mentioning that the $29.99 processing fee is only if you want them to deduct the $19.99 directly from your return. You can pay by credit card to e file and it will only cost $19.99, no processing fee. So my federal and state taxes are completed and both filed electronically for a total of $60. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 3, 2013

UPDATE: 03/21/13 - Amazon has updated the description

UPDATE: 03/21/13Amazon and Intuit have updated the product page with several notes and bullet points that more clearly explain exactly which services this piece of software offers and which cost extra. The included services are: federal prep and e-file and state prep, but state e-file is extra. The entire purpose of this review was to explain the fact that for most people, there would be an additional cost should they want to file things electronically for both the federal and state returns. This was because the product listing's main description never listed out that the state e-file was not included in the price. It was only included as very tiny text at the very bottom of the description and was very easy to miss. I appreciate that Intuit and Amazon have updated this listing accordingly. The software itself is easy to use and since everything is filed electronically, you usually get your return pretty quickly. I expect that this software cut my tax bill by 30% over what I would find had I rummaged through the tax code myself. I used turbotax online since 2009 and liked it.
