Republic, Lost, How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It

Creator: Lawrence Lessig | Political Science - 2011-10-05

In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Publisher: Hachette Digital, Inc.

About this book
In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government-driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission-trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature. With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic-and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left-Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted-but redeemable-representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness. While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Hidden Order, A Thriller

Creator: Brad Thor | Fiction - 2013-07-09

This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

About this book
#1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor returns with his hottest and most action-packed thriller yet! And don’t miss FREE FALL: A Prelude to Hidden Order, available for free download now!The most secretive organization in America operates without any accountability to the American people. Hiding in the shadows, pretending to be part of the United States government, its power is beyond measure. Control of this organization has just been lost and the future of the nation thrust into peril. When the five candidates being considered to head this mysterious agency suddenly go missing, covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath is summoned to Washington and set loose on the most dangerous chase ever to playout on American soil. But as the candidates begin turning up murdered, the chase becomes an all-too-public spectacle, with every indicator suggesting that the plot has its roots in a shadowy American cabal founded in the 1700s. With the United States on the verge of collapse, Harvath must untangle a web of conspiracy centuries in the making and head off the greatest threat America has ever seen. This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

I hate being gouged, and I hate weasel word explanations even more

I have been a loyal TurboTax customer since sometime in the 90's (I threw away the floppy disks a long time ago, and I don't recall the earliest date, but it's been a long time.) I am angry about the deliberate disabling of critical features in TurboTax Deluxe. No Schedules C, D, or E. In the past, the product was functional, even though the "Premier" version provided more help and guidance. That was extra functionality and if you needed it you could buy it. But in Deluxe you got the forms, the basic help info, the IRS docs, the final review checking, printing, and e-filing. So if you knew what a schedule C or D was (it's not that hard) you could file your taxes. Now in the name of "consistency" this has been taken away, and if I want to file my taxes using TurboTax I need to buy something almost twice as expensive. I have read the words about how Intuit labored over the vital need to be "consistent" and yes indeed after their stressful labors they did indeed... 1/5 M in SC (Santa Cruz, CA USA) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2014

they were all there and the software easily imported my carryover records from the 2013 turbotax file

Although a long time user of turbotax (satisfaction and habit), I have decided it is time to consider alternatives. Unlike many 5-star raters on this blog that seem to think that turbotax is the only alternative to CPAs and retail preparers (like H&R Block offices), there are tax software alternatives available also. Because of habit, satisfaction, and resistance to change I had not evaluated them previously.I contacted Bob, the VP of turbotax, and he advised me that the changes were necessary because "it was causing problems for 10 million customers at the expense of a very small fraction of the others." I'm guessing most of us on this blog are apparently a part of this small fraction of others. Considering that people who do not need schedules C, D, E, F, and K-1 probably do not care either way, I think this suggest Intuit hopes to get an additional $300 million revenue (10 million users who apparently care times $30 per upgrade); don't let anyone say it is not about... 1/5 Bob Meighan, VP TurboTax says:, December 7, 2014

Intuit kisses the corporate blarney stone again

My use of TurboTax would have reached drinking age this year, but I will be ending my relationship with Intuit instead. It has been on the rocks for some time, with the decimation of Quicken for Mac finally forcing me into other software. But I continued to use Turbotax because it was easy, and I had a backlog of files in that program. Changing is always difficult. Throughout my relationship with Intuit, I have been frequently amazed with the arrogant disdain they display for their customers. Over in the reviews for the PC version, Intuit VP Bob Meighan has responded to a number of the 1-star reviews (why can't we give zero stars?) with the drivel that you can still do the commonly needed forms that have been removed from the Deluxe version using the forms method and mailing them in. Mr. Meighan knows perfectly well that people don't buy Turbotax to use forms. He knows that people are buying e-file as part of the cost of the program, and that the method he espouses won't work with... 1/5 lar (Dallas, Tx) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe 2014 Fed + State + Fed Efile Tax Software + Refund Bonus Offer - Win (Software Download) Although a long time user of turbotax (satisfaction and habit), I have decided it is time to consider alternatives. Updated software - no new tricks, but no hidden fees this year either

The software is about the same as it has been in years' past. And, as in years' past, if you have not strictly set up your Quicken categories the way TurboTax expects to see them, you will experience some incorrect entries when you import from Quicken. Similarly, TurboTax does a pitiful job importing stock option trades from Quicken, primarily using the real Date Acquired info as the Date Sold and then leaving the Date Acquired field blank, so you have to manually go in and change these 2 dates for each of your transactions. Still, it eventually gets the job done and is much easier than trying to fill out paper forms. And I guess I have just become numb to the cutesy "We just saved you $7 in taxes!" gibberish and the plugs to upgrade to a more expensive version every time you have a tax circumstance that would prompt Intuit to want you to upgrade. As an aside, I too would like to know how two reviewers who were Intuit beta testers came up with identically worded phrases... 3/5 G. My Past Issues w/ TurboTax - - Creeping State Prices

I've been using TT since it was released in DOS, and as part of the installed base, have stuck with it since.Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time. The Question & Answer format continues, and it seems to be a good approach to cover your tax situation. It allows you to "explore on your own" any topic. The sequencing is unchanged -- personal info, income, deductions & credits, and error checking. My advance edition software is really just a template to carry over your previous data from the 2009 filings and an update checker - - as of now (01/10/2011), my tax reforming forms won't arrive until end of January and many IRS still need to be released as 2010 versions. With significant Federal incentive tax changes (like 1st time house... 3/5 Sui Lin Chee "Sui Lin Chee" (Silicon Valley, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File + State 2010 - [Old Version] (Software) I've been using TT since it was released in DOS, and as part of the installed base, have stuck with it since.Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time. The Question & Answer format continues, and it seems to be a good approach to cover your tax situation. Probably the best there is - but room for improvement

This review is for TuboTax 2010 Deluxe for Federal Returns. Fortunately I live in Texas and there is no state income tax so I don't have to worry about the state portion.TurboTax has had its share of issues but I came back to it because it does seem to be the best there is, but I'm knocking off a star because of the history of issues I've had with the program in previous years (like it not calculating tax correctly until I deleted some assets and then re-entered them). However, I was a little shocked to read that it requires 500MB of HD space PLUS up to 620MB more if Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed (Mac is only 255MB). Wow! That could be over 1GB to do taxes. How inefficient we have become!Fortunately the system requirements says it works on 64-bit systems, but doesn't specifically mention Windows 7 64-bit, but if it works with Vista 64-bit then it should work with Windows 7 64-bit.I may be working with this to help estimate my 2010 taxes... 4/5 Lantana Al (DFW, TX) - See all my reviews, January 5, 2011

Indispensable Tool -- Simplifies a Complex Annual Task

I used this product since 1988 (DOS, 5.25" floppies), and wouldn't want to give it up. I've been buying it through my FI which has a partnership discount rather than from a re-seller like Amazon.com & Costco. Right now, what you get is a TurboTax "shell" to transfer last year's "info data" to the current year, and forms which act as placeholders until finalized forms are released by the IRS. The State forms are preliminary and incomplete, and they are last to be released by TurboTax, because typically, State tax codes are based off of what the Feds do. Also, at this time, W-2's, 1099's, 1098's, etc. haven't been released, and although you can backfill them from all your 12/31/2012 statements, it reduces the ease you are trying to achieve. Also, wait until your IRS report forms are received, then do an online software update.TurboTax evolved to a Q&A type format which remains the user interface for the past decade or so, grouping similar topics together like "Income",... 4/5 Sui Lin Chee "Sui Lin Chee" (Silicon Valley, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Premier Federal + E-File + State 2012 [Old Version] (Software) I used this product since 1988 (DOS, 5.25" floppies), and wouldn't want to give it up. Great product - but, for first time users it take a bit more time

I have been using TurboTax for years. The transfer of data from prior years is fast and easy. I use it when it first comes out each year to do some quick tax calculations to plan my year end transactions. For planning purposes where one does not have all the various forms from financial institutions, one must force the program to ignore certain missing information, or go back to the paper copies of the various forms received from those institutions in prior years. These problems, of course, go away when one is doing the actual tax return, since those forms for the current year would be at hand. This is only a problem when doing early estimates without the various forms.I like that the program is constantly updated as one approaches the actual filing time, so that everything is current and up to date at the time of filing.A good solid product that gets better each year.Be sure to buy the level of Turbo Tax that you need for your own particular... 5/5 W. Terrible for income property (Premiere Edition)

I have used TT for many years. Last year I purchased the premier edition because I bought a rental property. I was hoping the wizard would walk me through all the steps for determining what is an expense and what is depreciable, specifically around HUD statement items. WRONG! You would think a key element of the wizard would be to walk the user through such an important document for preparing taxes. There is no intelligence built into the wizard - they just provide a few fields for you to input data but do not communicate the meaning and impact and what should qualify. It is up to you to discover that on your own. I was more than extremely disappointed, and it took me about 3 weeks to research various related items and then figure out how to input them into the right place in the wizard. VERY BAD INTERFACE SINCE THE PRODUCT IS MARKETED TO WALK YOU THROUGH EVERYTHING. This year I'm going to research H&R Block's software to determine if I can import my data from Turbotax from last... 1/5 CUNPDX - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Premier Federal + E-File + State 2012 [Old Version] (Software) I have used TT for many years.
