Detroit's Dan Gilbert: Henry Ford or Henry Potter?

  • " His Rock Ventures now owns or controls almost 8 million square feet of space in some 40 downtown Detroit buildings, prompting Simon to ask if his obsession with downtown Detroit real estate is "good for Detroit or good for you. For Gilbert - like many of his uber-rich brethren - his own prodigious fortune is proof that Detroit's only hope lies in following the same economic blueprint that guided his own rise to power. The answer, however, bears deeper scrutiny and leads one literally and figuratively into the thick weeds of Detroit's financial situation and Gilbert's role in it. Gilbert - who is unpretentious and friendly - seems genuinely motivated by a desire... Like a player in an all too real game of Monopoly, Gilbert takes inventory of his latest acquisitions: "The Chase Building," he continues, "and the one over there near the river.

Republic, Lost, How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It

Creator: Lawrence Lessig | Political Science - 2011-10-05

In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Publisher: Hachette Digital, Inc.

About this book
In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government-driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission-trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature. With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic-and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left-Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted-but redeemable-representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness. While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Hidden Order, A Thriller

Creator: Brad Thor | Fiction - 2013-07-09

This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

About this book
#1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor returns with his hottest and most action-packed thriller yet! And don’t miss FREE FALL: A Prelude to Hidden Order, available for free download now!The most secretive organization in America operates without any accountability to the American people. Hiding in the shadows, pretending to be part of the United States government, its power is beyond measure. Control of this organization has just been lost and the future of the nation thrust into peril. When the five candidates being considered to head this mysterious agency suddenly go missing, covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath is summoned to Washington and set loose on the most dangerous chase ever to playout on American soil. But as the candidates begin turning up murdered, the chase becomes an all-too-public spectacle, with every indicator suggesting that the plot has its roots in a shadowy American cabal founded in the 1700s. With the United States on the verge of collapse, Harvath must untangle a web of conspiracy centuries in the making and head off the greatest threat America has ever seen. This is thriller writing at its absolute best, where the stakes have never been higher, nor the line between good and evil so hard to discern.

0 4/5 Lucy - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + E-File + State 2012 for PC [Download] (Software Download) I just finished my taxes. One thing I will suggest for those having issues downloading state for extra $39.99 is to update state software, sign out of turbo tax and sign back in. State will be downloaded at no additional cost other than to e file state for $19.99. Those that claim its $19.99 plus $29.99 processing fee to e file state are not mentioning that the $29.99 processing fee is only if you want them to deduct the $19.99 directly from your return. You can pay by credit card to e file and it will only cost $19.99, no processing fee. So my federal and state taxes are completed and both filed electronically for a total of $60. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 3, 2013

UPDATE: 03/21/13 - Amazon has updated the description

UPDATE: 03/21/13Amazon and Intuit have updated the product page with several notes and bullet points that more clearly explain exactly which services this piece of software offers and which cost extra. The included services are: federal prep and e-file and state prep, but state e-file is extra. The entire purpose of this review was to explain the fact that for most people, there would be an additional cost should they want to file things electronically for both the federal and state returns. This was because the product listing's main description never listed out that the state e-file was not included in the price. It was only included as very tiny text at the very bottom of the description and was very easy to miss. I appreciate that Intuit and Amazon have updated this listing accordingly. The software itself is easy to use and since everything is filed electronically, you usually get your return pretty quickly. It also looks through a lot of deductions to make sure... 4/5 Dan (Lincoln, NE United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Software is Great, Support not so much

I expect that this software cut my tax bill by 30% over what I would find had I rummaged through the tax code myself. I used turbotax online since 2009 and liked it. This was on-sale and cheaper then the online price. It works just as well as online without the pesky multi stage authentication each time you login. Why 3 out of 5?I logged into turbotax online to download the .tax file for last year. When I clicked on "I need year xxx taxes in .tax format" it took me to buying turbo tax again. It took 45 minutes on the phone with a guy who wouldn't listen to me to finally get my taxes in .tax form so that I didn't have to re-enter information (employer ein, family demographics, etc) that are not on the 1040 you would print. For anyone else needing to know, if you want to import that data from turbotax online into turbotax desktop.1. --NOTE: Make sure to read my latest update at the bottom of the review before purchasing--I've been using Turbo Tax for at least 10 years now. I used TaxCut one year because it was a little cheaper. I got audited that year (TaxCut didn't check an appropriate box, so I sent a letter to the IRS explaining that, and they dropped the audit, but it was still a major pain). It is also important to note that if you have a complicated tax year, you may be better off doing the taxes yourself or paying someone to do it. Two years ago, there was a bug where you couldn't take both the earned income credit and one of the college education credits- after speaking with customer service, and then getting put in contact with one of their engineers who barley spoke English, I realized that you really can't trust any kind of tax software for unusual or complex tax situations. I sent them screenshots, and detailed explanations of how to recreate the bug, and they still claimed everything was... 2/5 Computerdude1032 (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews, December 30, 2012

    Warning to Mac Users!

If and when you purchase tax software for this year's income tax season, please note that Intuit has changed its Macintosh hardware requirements without saying so anywhere on the Turbotax package. As I have done for many years, I purchased a copy of Turbotax for use on my dual core iMac, which is running OS 10.6.8. The package states that it will run on this OS version, and says nothing else about Mac hardware. Only after installing the program and getting an error message that this new version of Turbotax does not run on my not so venerable computer, was I directed to the Turbotax website. It took a bit of drilling down through the support pages before I was told that Intuit has rewritten the Turbotax code to only run on 64-bit processors, and will not run on lowly 32-bit processors such as the dual core on my machine. What makes this even more annoying is that most retailers will not take the Turbotax back, because the package was opened. This review is from: TurboTax Premier Fed + Efile + State 2013 with Refund Bonus Offer [Download] (Software Download) Downloaded 2013 edition Nov 17, 2013. The 2013 edition appears to be smooth and functions well, and may be less "user hostile" than in previous years; perhaps that is wishful thinking, but at least for the first hour of testing, it worked flawlessly. I was able to load in estimates of my tax values to help me calculate by January 15 quarterly payment, and to test some end of year tax planning strategies. This is why I purchased the product early. The "state sales tax" in lieu of state income tax function did not work -- a little window popped up and said this form had not been released by the IRS yet, and would be available Dec 31. I got around this by hardwiring another deduction in home interest. The forms are not for filing. The new form 8960 Medicare Investment tax is in there and appears to work. The new AMT rules are in there. Good luck, fellow tax payers. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 17, 2013

Indispensable Tool -- Simplifies a Complex Annual Task

I used this product since 1988 (DOS, 5.25" floppies), and wouldn't want to give it up. I've been buying it through my FI which has a partnership discount rather than from a re-seller like Amazon.com & Costco. Right now, what you get is a TurboTax "shell" to transfer last year's "info data" to the current year, and forms which act as placeholders until finalized forms are released by the IRS. The State forms are preliminary and incomplete, and they are last to be released by TurboTax, because typically, State tax codes are based off of what the Feds do. Also, at this time, W-2's, 1099's, 1098's, etc. haven't been released, and although you can backfill them from all your 12/31/2012 statements, it reduces the ease you are trying to achieve. Also, wait until your IRS report forms are received, then do an online software update.TurboTax evolved to a Q&A type format which remains the user interface for the past decade or so, grouping similar topics together like "Income",... 4/5 Sui Lin Chee "Sui Lin Chee" (Silicon Valley, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Premier Federal + E-File + State 2012 (Software) I used this product since 1988 (DOS, 5.25" floppies), and wouldn't want to give it up. Great product - but, for first time users it take a bit more time

I have been using TurboTax for years. The transfer of data from prior years is fast and easy. I use it when it first comes out each year to do some quick tax calculations to plan my year end transactions. For planning purposes where one does not have all the various forms from financial institutions, one must force the program to ignore certain missing information, or go back to the paper copies of the various forms received from those institutions in prior years. These problems, of course, go away when one is doing the actual tax return, since those forms for the current year would be at hand. This is only a problem when doing early estimates without the various forms.I like that the program is constantly updated as one approaches the actual filing time, so that everything is current and up to date at the time of filing.A good solid product that gets better each year.Be sure to buy the level of Turbo Tax that you need for your own particular... 5/5 W. Terrible for income property (Premiere Edition)

I have used TT for many years. Last year I purchased the premier edition because I bought a rental property. I was hoping the wizard would walk me through all the steps for determining what is an expense and what is depreciable, specifically around HUD statement items. WRONG! You would think a key element of the wizard would be to walk the user through such an important document for preparing taxes. There is no intelligence built into the wizard - they just provide a few fields for you to input data but do not communicate the meaning and impact and what should qualify. It is up to you to discover that on your own. I was more than extremely disappointed, and it took me about 3 weeks to research various related items and then figure out how to input them into the right place in the wizard. VERY BAD INTERFACE SINCE THE PRODUCT IS MARKETED TO WALK YOU THROUGH EVERYTHING. Updated software - no new tricks, but no hidden fees this year either

The software is about the same as it has been in years' past. And, as in years' past, if you have not strictly set up your Quicken categories the way TurboTax expects to see them, you will experience some incorrect entries when you import from Quicken. Similarly, TurboTax does a pitiful job importing stock option trades from Quicken, primarily using the real Date Acquired info as the Date Sold and then leaving the Date Acquired field blank, so you have to manually go in and change these 2 dates for each of your transactions. Still, it eventually gets the job done and is much easier than trying to fill out paper forms. And I guess I have just become numb to the cutesy "We just saved you $7 in taxes!" gibberish and the plugs to upgrade to a more expensive version every time you have a tax circumstance that would prompt Intuit to want you to upgrade. As an aside, I too would like to know how two reviewers who were Intuit beta testers came up with identically worded phrases... 3/5 G. My Past Issues w/ TurboTax - - Creeping State Prices

I've been using TT since it was released in DOS, and as part of the installed base, have stuck with it since.Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time. The Question & Answer format continues, and it seems to be a good approach to cover your tax situation. It allows you to "explore on your own" any topic. The sequencing is unchanged -- personal info, income, deductions & credits, and error checking. My advance edition software is really just a template to carry over your previous data from the 2009 filings and an update checker - - as of now (01/10/2011), my tax reforming forms won't arrive until end of January and many IRS still need to be released as 2010 versions. With significant Federal incentive tax changes (like 1st time house... 3/5 Sui Lin Chee "Sui Lin Chee" (Silicon Valley, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File + State 2010 - [Old Version] (Software) I've been using TT since it was released in DOS, and as part of the installed base, have stuck with it since.Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time. The Question & Answer format continues, and it seems to be a good approach to cover your tax situation. Probably the best there is - but room for improvement

This review is for TuboTax 2010 Deluxe for Federal Returns. Fortunately I live in Texas and there is no state income tax so I don't have to worry about the state portion.TurboTax has had its share of issues but I came back to it because it does seem to be the best there is, but I'm knocking off a star because of the history of issues I've had with the program in previous years (like it not calculating tax correctly until I deleted some assets and then re-entered them). However, I was a little shocked to read that it requires 500MB of HD space PLUS up to 620MB more if Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is not installed (Mac is only 255MB). Wow! That could be over 1GB to do taxes. How inefficient we have become!Fortunately the system requirements says it works on 64-bit systems, but doesn't specifically mention Windows 7 64-bit, but if it works with Vista 64-bit then it should work with Windows 7 64-bit.I may be working with this to help estimate my 2010 taxes... 4/5 A.
