Not worth the money - 98 with a pretty face

Windows ME just isn't worth the investment. It is just Windows 98 with some added features. The core operating system is still the same, unreliable OS it always was.Let's start by looking at the plus side. The new features are pretty nice. Windows Media Player is much better than its predecessors. Internet Explorer 5.5 is a great browser and not having to download the beast is an added bonus. The auto update feature (while somewhat annoying at times) is much easier than searching the web for the latest software updates. If you feel these features are reason enough to upgrade your to ME, then go for it.As I said, ME still has plenty of reliability problems. It is still possible for a single application to bring down the entire operating system. In my experience it has been rare that I actually get the OS to shut down properly. I have used Linux and NT for years and gotten used to their stability. I had forgotten just how bad the stability of this line of... 2/5 Douglas Welzel (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews, December 29, 2000

    Don't waste your money!

1/5 Steve - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Upgrade w/ Encryption Coded Software [Old Version] (CD-ROM) Two weeks ago, I carefully installed Windows ME on my computer, replacing the preinstalled Windows 98. That was a mistake. While ME has some nice features and improvements over 98, it left my system more unstable and buggy than it had ever been before. For the record, my computer easily met the system requirements for ME. Anyway, after the upgrade, I found IE 5.5 to be slower than IE 5.01, Media Player 7 was a piece of garbage, my McAfee VirusScan loaded much slower, there were video driver glitches, etc...I had similar hassles years ago when I upgraded another computer from Windows 95 to 98.After the experiences I have had, I do NOT believe in upgrading your PC's operating system. If your machine came preinstalled with Windows 95, 98, or ME, then leave it alone. Putting in a new OS totally upsets the equation and causes innumerable problems. Many of these problems don't develop right away. Also, upgrading your OS often violates your manufacturers warranty. So if you... Most of the software it came with does not work ...

1/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: FixITnow (DVD-ROM) Most of the software it came with does not work anymore most of it stated it could not open it error message, also the virus removal part of this CD has many outdated virus removal programs that no longer work or updated via the company, also the virus removal part logs you into a Windows 8.1 under some else's computer log in credentials and does not remove my login for my Windows virus to be removed. Never buy this CD and also Amazon if you are reading this then I would advise you to test this and verify it not fully working with half the apps preloaded in it or just stop selling this thing cause only less then half of the preloaded apps work on it anymore cause it is to outdated Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 22, 2016

this has been a waste of time and money

1/5 Bernard J. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: FixITnow (DVD-ROM) I recently purchased this software CD to recover a forgotten password on my laptop. After having boot into Trinity Rescue Kit (TRK) I received errors stating that TRK was not found on disk. So far, this has been a waste of time and money. I expected to be able to run TRK and reset the password with little or no fuss, instead I paid for software that has not delivered on what the description promises. At this time, I would not recommend this software. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 14, 2016

Windows XP professional, do you need it?

If you're reading this. You want to upgrade, your old computer to Windows XP Professional Edition here are a few things to keep in mind.First thing is, you can download service pack two for Windows update. So no need to buy it integrated with XP.These are what I consider the minimum system requirements:256 MB of RAM. I have found is adequate more equals better.500 MHz or higher will do.7200 rpm hard drive will help a lot.If you're running Windows millennium edition, or 98 upgrade now the stability is vastly improved. Gone are the blue screens of death.Frequently asked question: is Windows XP Pro better than home edition?Windows XP Pro has a more high-end networking features that most home users will never miss or would even know were missing. So for most users Windows home edition is fine. They both are based on the same code and are almost identical. If you're thinking of... 5/5 Chuck Bittner (New England USA) - See all my reviews, January 22, 2005

You can get SP2 elsewhere too!

I have been running Windows XP since 2001 and to tell you the honest truth it has been stable ever since. With the introduction of SP2 in this minor update of Windows XP, Microsoft has decided to make the product "secure", than it was thought to be in the beginning. But the past few years have been rough on Microsoft, with consistency in attacks on the product with such vulnerabilities as Trojans, buffer overflows, viruses and the most memorable of the all Blaster (August 2003).Ever since its debut, Windows XP has been causing a lot of headaches and wreaking havoc on corporate networks because of its susceptibility vulnerabilities that were not fixed in its initial release or Service Pack 1. So Microsoft decided to go back to the drawing board and decided to rethink what Windows XP should mean in terms of Security. At first Service Pack 2 was thought out to only be a minor Service Pack update with usual bug fixes, but because of the aforementioned problems Microsoft took... 4/5 Andre Da Costa (Jamaica W.I.) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Windows XP Professional UPGRADE with SP2 (CD-ROM) I have been running Windows XP since 2001 and to tell you the honest truth it has been stable ever since. Improvement over older versions, but...

First of all, Microsoft needs to come down on their prices (Not that this will ever happen). I build computers for a living, and I'd say that 9 times out of 10 Windows is the single most expensive piece of any PC I build. That being said, XP has come a long way. Service pack 2 has done wonders for security. I also found it is the most stable version of Windows I've used to date. That's not to say it doesn't have it's flaws. It still lets in it's share of "germs", stops responding from time to time (hangs), and it's very slow to shut down. The built-in CD writing software is TERRIBLE and Remote Desktop is not always a pleasure to use either. However, the biggest problem I've had so far is with product activation. As a PC technician, I'm always testing new parts. The most annoying problem I've had is that after you make a certain number of hardware changes (let's say you replace a video card, a hard drive and add some memory) all within a certain period of time (180 days maybe?) Windows... 2/5 D. Murphy (New Hampshire) - See all my reviews, December 10, 2005
