Windows Me, The Missing Manual

Creator: David Pogue | 2000-09-08

"Windows ME" is the ideal user's guide for the world's most popular operating system.

Publisher: Oreilly & Associates Incorporated

About this book
Windows Me, the hotly anticipated successor to Windows 98, comes with dozens of important new features. They include a home-networking Wizard; Movie Maker, for creating digital sounds and movies; and self-healing, self-updating software components. But one major failing of Windows remains unaddressed in the Me edition: it comes without a single page of printed instructions. In Windows Me: The Missing Manual, author David Pogue provides the friendly, authoritative book that should have been in the box. It's the ideal user's guide for the world's most popular operating system. The book begins at the beginning: with a tour of the Desktop, the enhanced Start menu, and instructions for customizing the Taskbar and toolbars. There's a special focus on organizing files, folders, and windows for maximum efficiency and minimum clutter. More advanced chapters explore each control panel and built-in application; walk readers through every conceivable kind of configuration (for Internet use, for peripheral equipment, and so on); and guide them in setting up a small network--an essential skill in today's home or small office--including how to share a single Internet connection among several PCs. The book even shows readers how to access one of today's hottest PC features: listening to live radio, or watching live TV, from all over the world, via the Internet. Special appendixes cover more technical ground: the various DOS applications that govern the startup and shutdown process, instructions for installing and updating Windows, and so on. Windows Me: The Missing Manualis a one-stop reference for the professional and consumer Windows user. In keeping with the high standards of the Missing Manual line, the book features superb writing, offers special features for both absolute novices and power users, and covers its topic completely. If Microsoft could close its eyes and wish for the perfect user's guide for its flagship product, Windows Me: The Missing Manualwould magically appear.

Not worth the money - 98 with a pretty face

Windows ME just isn't worth the investment. It is just Windows 98 with some added features. The core operating system is still the same, unreliable OS it always was.Let's start by looking at the plus side. The new features are pretty nice. Windows Media Player is much better than its predecessors. Internet Explorer 5.5 is a great browser and not having to download the beast is an added bonus. The auto update feature (while somewhat annoying at times) is much easier than searching the web for the latest software updates. If you feel these features are reason enough to upgrade your to ME, then go for it.As I said, ME still has plenty of reliability problems. It is still possible for a single application to bring down the entire operating system. In my experience it has been rare that I actually get the OS to shut down properly. I have used Linux and NT for years and gotten used to their stability. I had forgotten just how bad the stability of this line of... 2/5 Douglas Welzel (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews, December 29, 2000

For the record, my computer easily met the system requirements for ME. Anyway, after the upgrade, I found IE 5.5 to be slower than IE 5.01, Media Player 7 was a piece of garbage, my McAfee VirusScan loaded much slower, there were video driver glitches, etc...I had similar hassles years ago when I upgraded another computer from Windows 95 to 98.After the experiences I have had, I do NOT believe in upgrading your PC's operating system. If your machine came preinstalled with Windows 95, 98, or ME, then leave it alone. Putting in a new OS totally upsets the equation and causes innumerable problems. Many of these problems don't develop right away. Also, upgrading your OS often violates your manufacturers warranty. So if you... Win98 2nd Edition fixes half-baked Win98 1st Edition hypeOS

I don't buy 'bleeding-edge' operating systems and softwares anymore unless they've been out on the market for at least 3 months. Historically Microsoft has been so eager to make sales that most of their products have been released half-baked & the customer winds up risking invaluable data by installing them, wasting hours of time diagnosing problems that can't be fixed by an end user, and investing a significant amount of money in hemorroidal ointments. The 2nd Edition of Win98 is what the 1st Edition of Win98 should have been (in fact, it's what the 1st Edition of Win95 should have been). The 1st Edition of Win98 was garbage; a lot of hype, a lot of stuff most people remove once installed, and a total pig on system resources. This 2nd Edition is stable enough to risk upgrading from Win95 for production and home stations and has enough fixes in it to warrant its price. One recommendation: if you can avoid it, don't buy the Win98 2nd Edition Upgrade as it's buggier than... 3/5 joseph a. williamson - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Deck Is Stacked

This is a neat tool to hone your skills but does not duplicate playing conditions.Luck and skill are main ingredients to any card game. The problem the software makers had was that, unlike in chess software, the computer card player in this software is not smarter than the average human player. So, the software creates an "equal" playing field by stacking the deck in favor of the computer opponent(s). In the case of partner playing, the human partner's computer partner plays a notch or two under the skill level of the computer opponents. So, the software "levels the playing field" by giving the opposing team better cards and a less skillful computer opponent.I used this software primarily to play Canasta. What I found was that at the highest opening meld level (120 points), the computer team had little or no problem coming up with the opening meld 50% or more of the time. In contrast, the human-computer team came in easily about 10% of the time. So,... 3/5 C B (Oregon USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Hoyle Card Games (Jewel Case) [Old Version] (CD-ROM) This is a neat tool to hone your skills but does not duplicate playing conditions.Luck and skill are main ingredients to any card game. No use to me

0 1/5 Phil Buglass (Waynesboro PA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Amazon Music with Prime Music [PC] (Software Download) I cannot see the purpose of a music player where you have to log in with a password every time you want to listen to your music...The final straw came a week or so after I installed the program, having tested it once and never touched it since. My PC was running really slowly, and investigation revealed 2 instances of a process called something like "amazonmusichelper" were running, each taking up nearly 40% of the capacity of my 6-core processor.I don't need help with my music, thank you very much. I certainly don't need or want any program which will activate itself and use up all my CPU cycles, without any kind of permission or notification. The player was uninstalled and trashed. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 9, 2013

    Garbage

0 1/5 CGMusicFan - See all my reviews This review is from: Amazon Music with Prime Music [PC] (Software Download) It randomly misses songs when uploading. I uploaded 100 cd's, it missed one or more songs on 12 cd's. Then to get it to pick up the missed songs, I had to rescan my entire music directory (since it doesn't allow you to select more than one cd to upload at a time). Even after that it still missed some so I had to upload the missed ones one-at-a-time. So now what? I have 400 more cd's to upload. Do I have to stop after every batch I load and manually check to see which songs it dropped? There is no way to sort the uploaded library by date, so I have to 'remember' which ones I uploaded then manually check. It's even missing some songs from CD's I purchased via Auto-Rip. A very frustrating experience. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 1, 2014

0 1/5 J. A. Moriello (Newark, DE USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Amazon Music with Prime Music [PC] (Software Download) This product cannot handle a large collection. The older version still has a few problems but at least if you play with it a bit you can get satisfactory results on your PC and great results on your Kindle. When I download the new cloud player for pc it looks like it's working but it does not hold your collection after you shut off your pc and then will NOT allow you to reload your collection. I have started over many times and it only gets worse. Probably works great with 2000 songs, but I need it to work with 60000 songs like the old version does if you've paid the premium. Please advise all members when this obvious problem has been corrected. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 8, 2013
