Windows Me, The Missing Manual

Creator: David Pogue | 2000-09-08

"Windows ME" is the ideal user's guide for the world's most popular operating system.

Publisher: Oreilly & Associates Incorporated

About this book
Windows Me, the hotly anticipated successor to Windows 98, comes with dozens of important new features. They include a home-networking Wizard; Movie Maker, for creating digital sounds and movies; and self-healing, self-updating software components. But one major failing of Windows remains unaddressed in the Me edition: it comes without a single page of printed instructions. In Windows Me: The Missing Manual, author David Pogue provides the friendly, authoritative book that should have been in the box. It's the ideal user's guide for the world's most popular operating system. The book begins at the beginning: with a tour of the Desktop, the enhanced Start menu, and instructions for customizing the Taskbar and toolbars. There's a special focus on organizing files, folders, and windows for maximum efficiency and minimum clutter. More advanced chapters explore each control panel and built-in application; walk readers through every conceivable kind of configuration (for Internet use, for peripheral equipment, and so on); and guide them in setting up a small network--an essential skill in today's home or small office--including how to share a single Internet connection among several PCs. The book even shows readers how to access one of today's hottest PC features: listening to live radio, or watching live TV, from all over the world, via the Internet. Special appendixes cover more technical ground: the various DOS applications that govern the startup and shutdown process, instructions for installing and updating Windows, and so on. Windows Me: The Missing Manualis a one-stop reference for the professional and consumer Windows user. In keeping with the high standards of the Missing Manual line, the book features superb writing, offers special features for both absolute novices and power users, and covers its topic completely. If Microsoft could close its eyes and wish for the perfect user's guide for its flagship product, Windows Me: The Missing Manualwould magically appear.

During the installation process for Windows ME (I was upgrading my laptop from 98) I was presented with a myriad of screens telling me how great Windows ME was and how much change was influenced by "customer requests" and issues from their support department.Ironically, after the install completed and machine rebooted, Windows ME greeted with the infamous "blue screen of death".After spending a couple of hours using the diagnostic tools packaged with ME and troubleshooting the problem, I was finally able to get my system up and running. After using ME for a couple days, here are the cold hard facts as I see them. This is a patch to 98, this is not an upgrade. It contains a lot of multimedia extras that are available from Microsoft's download site. The OS performance was not noticeably improved to me in any area. 3 stars is probably a bit too generous!!!

Ok where to begin with Microsoft's newest P.O.S.? I had the chance to start running Microsoft Windows Me a few months ago, and I jumped at the shot. I was really happy to finally get a new OS on my machine. Let me begin by letting everyone know what I am running now. I have a custom built machine, by myself. It is a Cerleron 566 overclocked to 850Mhz on an Abit Rev.II motherboard, 128mb RAM, 100 gigs of Hard drive space, Road Runner cable (not so) high speed internet access, Turtle Beach: Santa Cruz soundcard and a Matrox G200 Mystique 8mb video card. Ok I'll put it this way, Microsoft's Windows ME does not let me use my computer to its best of performance capabilites. Win Me is slow and it looks like a direct rip off of Windows 2000. Well not that, that is a bad thing, Win 2k is at least a stable operating system that is powerful (to say the least). Windows ME just runs about as fast as a turtle, and it is system resource hungry. I constantly have to restart... 3/5 John Besse (Florida) - See all my reviews, September 26, 2000

    Worth the money?

This is yet another version of Windows which barely improves on Windows 95. This is basically an update for all the new devices and hardware that are out there. At the core it still works the same as the last couple Windows. I wouldn't recommend buying this unless you have a brand new computer, otherwise, like in my case, it will just slow down your computer even more. There are some small bonuses to this version though. It does come with some ok games, and improved multimedia capabilities, but most of these you could already download from the microsoft webpage. I have to admit some of the more pestering points to Windows 98 have now been fixed, but I'm sure most users will hardly notice. Many of the changes are just cosmetic, or simplify a certain task.I have been using this version for about a month now, and sometimes I want to uninstall it, it can really slow things down at times, and it does tend to freeze my computer an aweful lot more than previous versions... 3/5 D. Not worth the money - 98 with a pretty face

Windows ME just isn't worth the investment. It is just Windows 98 with some added features. The core operating system is still the same, unreliable OS it always was.Let's start by looking at the plus side. The new features are pretty nice. Windows Media Player is much better than its predecessors. Internet Explorer 5.5 is a great browser and not having to download the beast is an added bonus. The auto update feature (while somewhat annoying at times) is much easier than searching the web for the latest software updates. If you feel these features are reason enough to upgrade your to ME, then go for it.As I said, ME still has plenty of reliability problems. It is still possible for a single application to bring down the entire operating system. In my experience it has been rare that I actually get the OS to shut down properly. I have used Linux and NT for years and gotten used to their stability. I had forgotten just how bad the stability of this line of... 2/5 Douglas Welzel (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews, December 29, 2000

For the record, my computer easily met the system requirements for ME. Anyway, after the upgrade, I found IE 5.5 to be slower than IE 5.01, Media Player 7 was a piece of garbage, my McAfee VirusScan loaded much slower, there were video driver glitches, etc...I had similar hassles years ago when I upgraded another computer from Windows 95 to 98.After the experiences I have had, I do NOT believe in upgrading your PC's operating system. If your machine came preinstalled with Windows 95, 98, or ME, then leave it alone. Putting in a new OS totally upsets the equation and causes innumerable problems. Many of these problems don't develop right away. Also, upgrading your OS often violates your manufacturers warranty. So if you... Win98 2nd Edition fixes half-baked Win98 1st Edition hypeOS

I don't buy 'bleeding-edge' operating systems and softwares anymore unless they've been out on the market for at least 3 months. Historically Microsoft has been so eager to make sales that most of their products have been released half-baked & the customer winds up risking invaluable data by installing them, wasting hours of time diagnosing problems that can't be fixed by an end user, and investing a significant amount of money in hemorroidal ointments. The 2nd Edition of Win98 is what the 1st Edition of Win98 should have been (in fact, it's what the 1st Edition of Win95 should have been). The 1st Edition of Win98 was garbage; a lot of hype, a lot of stuff most people remove once installed, and a total pig on system resources. This 2nd Edition is stable enough to risk upgrading from Win95 for production and home stations and has enough fixes in it to warrant its price. One recommendation: if you can avoid it, don't buy the Win98 2nd Edition Upgrade as it's buggier than... 3/5 Bill Welch (New York) - See all my reviews This review is from: Windows 98: Second Edition (CD-ROM) Windows 98 Is a huge improvement over Win 95 and compared to what's out there it's the best. Linux is getting better but still not user friendly, OS/2 is dead, and the MAC OS just does not have any software so compare to the rest it's the best. If you are going to install it on a server or workstation I would recommend Windows NT, or Windows 2000, if you know what you are doing linux. One thing about Windows 98 if you play with it too much trying to tweak it, it will crash so buyer be ware. Windows 98 will fill your HD will full of junk, but once again compared to what's out there it's the best. User friendly, has allot of support and allot of software. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 1999

I was sad to read the reviews about the origami cover/case for the Prime and I had to search for a decent cover/case.I was looking for something NOT bulky.I was looking for something that does NOT cover any features (cameras, speakers, buttons).I was looking for something that I can quickly remove and put back on.I was looking for something sturdy.I was looking for something that can prop up the Prime (and it can do it two different ways).I was looking for something cheap!I was looking for something that keeps the lid closed with magnets (not just by gravity).Everything that I was looking for I found with this case! Its sleek and classy. The item itself is "Prime" eligible so I received it the day it was promised. The case does have a strong "new leather" smell, I like it, it might put some people off. Better Than Expected

I got this case for my TF201 Transformer Prime with the intention to protect it but keep it as convenient as possible for myself to use. When ordering it, I wasn't sure of its ability to fulfill my expectations in this. I'm pleased to say, it's actually better than I'd hoped. The leather feels great, and smells like new, which I like. The Transformer remains removable from this case with ease. Also, it stays quite compact. The tablet is quite snug inside the case. This is a good thing. I can shake the thing like crazy and can't feel even the tiniest of movement within its new home. The folding-back cover is great and stays in place when you want it to because it's magnetized. The screen cover effectively stands/props the tablet up in the way that you would expect, and even magnetizes into place in its folded position. These magnets are reasonably strong and will not let go of each other unless you WANT them to. In fact, pulling them apart gives a nice, satisfying snap-apart... 5/5 Robert A. Feels, works great!

This is my second case for my Transformer Prime, the first being the official Trans Sleave which I quickly returned. I was skeptical of this case before ordering because I originally wanted an open face case in which none of the glass is covered up but I needed protection and had to order something fast so said what the heck!Well I am more then pleased with this case! It's very slim, it has all the proper slots connections and buttons and even has speaker holes and the 2 mic holes which other cases have over looked. I'm glad I gave this case a try because having some of the glass covered is actually a good thing for playing games as it gives you a physical reminder of not sliding controls off of the touch screen area. Below are my testing results:Fitting: It fits snug and slim with out adding any bulk to the tablet.Sound: Can hear everything loud and clear in all positions and even when the front is completely folded over the back.Using... 5/5 Alan C. a classic sitcom

Steven Levitan's JUST SHOOT ME remains a refreshingly-hilarious sitcom, thanks to pin-sharp scripts and top performances from a perfect cast. This box set includes the entire first and second seasons.Young and idealistic journalist Maya Gallo (Laura San Giacomo) is fired from her newsroom job and has no other choice than to ask her father, Jack (George Segal) for money. Instead he invites her to join the staff of his fashion magazine Blush. Maya finds herself at odds with her co-workers including womanising photographer Elliott DiMauro (Enrico Colantoni), Jack's pint-sized insult-wielding assistant Dennis Finch (David Spade) and alcoholic over-the-hill fashion editor Nina Van Horn (Wendie Malick). The first season (which only ran for 6 episodes) includes the controversial "Lemon Wacky Hello" where Elliott, Maya, Nina and Finch all fall under the effects of a hallucinogenic candy that Jack brought back from China. Just Shoot Me: Must-See TV On DVD!

While some Just Shoot Me fans claim "the show got lame near the end," for me, the show was consistently funny up to the end. This was mostly due to the clever writing and the brilliant cast who after working together for all those seasons had developed that "TV family chemistry" that always made me want to tune in for each episode no matter what time slot NBC would move the show to. Shame on NBC for their poor treatment of Just Shoot Me.However, what isn't poor is the first-rate treatment of this DVD collection. Great packaging with nice box and disc art which neatly aligns with the inner foldout background photos of the cast. All 31 hilarious Seasons 1 & 2 episodes are digitally remastered and unedited. I was actually surprised by the restored content while viewing the set, having grown accustomed to the syndicated episodes because they air so frequently. It blew me away to hear Jack's restored voiceover during the closing photo screenshot from "The Walk" episode as well... 5/5 Servo (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews, August 18, 2005

Where the hell are the rest of the seasons?!

The first 2 seasons were great (and deserve their 5 stars), and they deserve to be followed up by the rest of the seasons. Attention Sony, and any other idiot company with a stake in this series, who are dragging their collective feet on getting the rest of the seasons out the door: Get your stupid ridiculous legal garbage sorted out YESTERDAY and get the freaking season sets into production! We the fans don't care about who owns the music rights, or which actors had a rider in their contracts for royalties on the sets, which you are now arguing about, or whatever else ridiculous garbage you idiots are bickering about. JUST. GET. IT. DONE!Don't tick off your fan base like Mad About You did to theirs by pulling this exact same stunt. I can tell by the sales numbers of Mad About You DVD sets that screwing the fans for so long has hurt the long term sales of Mad About You on DVD. This is how boycotts happen, you morons. This is also what prompts idiot teenagers/pirates... 5/5 R. McAdams (CA, USA) - See all my reviews, May 28, 2007
