Good software, but (mostly) pointless to upgrade

I've been using Quicken for years. I don't upgrade yearly, though, because there are no significant advantages in doing so. This year was no exception. I moved from a very stable 2013 to 2016. Now, frequently when I run Quicken I have to kill the process because it hangs when I move between accounts. I've not figured out why, but if I update banking information, then move from one account to another to check balances, etc. it hangs. I've learned it's best to go in and just do one thing, exit, then come back. That's a bit sad. Otherwise, it pretty much works and acts like 2013. So, what did I pay for? The one benefit I did get is that it no longer pesters me to upgrade. That's good, I guess.I give Quicken 2016 three stars because, in spite of its shortcomings, Quicken is still pretty good software. What it is not, however, is worth the price they charge to upgrade. It's definitely worth buying if you don't have financial management software of any sort, but the price of the... 3/5 Paul E. Jones (Apex, NC) - See all my reviews, November 22, 2015

    Waste of money

2/5 PKS (Wickliffe, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Quicken Deluxe 2016 Personal Finance & Budgeting Software (Software Download) Waste of money upgrading from 2015 to 2016. First, problem installing. Second, the syncing with the banks are worst off. I purchased it in hoping to have better sync with banks. So far been a nightmare. I have been Quicken user for a long time. The last few release were nothing but disappointment. I am not sure if it's Quicken or Synchrony Bank. As large and as many consumers using it, they don't seem to be updating accurately. As far of the new features, I don't see any differences at all. Nothing but disappointment. Waste of $49.95 :) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 21, 2015

1/5 P.A.T. (Whidbey Island, WA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Quicken Deluxe 2016 Personal Finance & Budgeting Software (CD-ROM) If you're thinking of "up0grading" an earlier version of this software, forget it. This version basically does nothing that couldn't be accomplished with the 2010 version, and it adds a ridiculous extra "feature" that requires you to log on to the Intuit Web site when you use it. I see no reason I should even have to be connected to the Internet to use standalone software I've bought and paid for, let alone signed on to an online account. This is a plainly stupid unnecessary intrusion on our personal and financial privacy. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 27, 2015

Not worthy of a paid upgrade, but finally stable after several months

I truly believe that what they do is grab one marginal new feature such as free credit score and package it with the latest set of bug fixes and call it a paid upgrade. It's truly shameful, especially to users like myself that continue to buy it year after year. Most of the time when I review products I think the 1-star reviews are outlier bad experiences, but with Quicken, this is my third year in a row of a terrible experience. Here's the way it went:Day one:Back up everything, twice, just to be sure. Make sure Qucken 2014 installer is still around. Even though they say you won't lose your data, there is so much else that could go wrong.Download the update, count to 10, then install it.Hey, it installed seamlessly and quickly! It seems to start up faster!Everything seems to work. Shortcuts may have even been fixed.Hey, I can now enter a number in my pay check (split), get the error that stuff doesn't add up, and it will... 3/5 jimstamm - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Just a dirty shadow of their former selves

Coming from Quicken 2013. Totally broke my mobile syncing. desktop program crashes every time you do anything related to mobile. longtime Quicken using and I'm an accountant, so I know what I should be experiencing. The first installation was an upgrade. I let Quicken 2015 uninstall v. 2013 and install v.2015, data conversion, etc... The installation appeared to crash when the wizard reaches the "convert your Quicken Cloud data. The only way out is with task manager. I completely removed the v.2015 installation and the data file. The second installation attempt was a clean install. However it crashed at the exact same point.Again, only task manager can terminate the failed installation. After both failed installations, Quicken V.2015 seemed to work except for action under the Mobile tab.Any selections you chose there would crash the program. Again, task manager was required to terminate the non-responding program.I will be... 1/5 Tim Whitfield (Georgia) - See all my reviews, October 5, 2014

Upgrade? Quicken 2011 = more ads + less features = FAIL

It was bad enough when Quicken simply littered your desktop with icons linking to Quicken Loans, Free Credit Reports (which are never free) and a sundry of other financial pay-to-play products. Now they've taken things to a whole new level with ads literally BUILT INTO the GUI (Graphic User Interface: the 'skin' with which you engage with the program). An example: in the new 'refinance calculator' there is a large banner ad for CHASE BANK. The refinance calculator itself is poor and majorly inferior to free ones available online, but more on that later. I don't expect to pay upwards of $50.00 for a piece of software that contains banner ads! That is simply unacceptable. In freeware, I understand it, but not in something I paid full retail for!Adding insult to injury, INTUIT has actually removed one of the best features of previous Quicken releases, the CASH FLOW monthly chart. They've replaced it with a projected balances chart which is ugly, harder to read, and doesn't... 1/5 ConsumerAdvocate (dakotad555) at (gmail) dot ... Removed Most Important Feature

1/5 Twilight - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Quicken Deluxe 2011 - [Old Version] (Software) I have been a loyal user of Quicken since 1994 and upgraded whenever each new version was released. This is the first time that I have returned the product. One of the features that I use every day is the Cash Flow center in the Planning tab. This has been removed. It is completely incomprehensible to me why they would remove this feature. At a glance, it completely encapsulated my cash flow for the month, both graphically and numerically. Their new "Projected Balances" feature is completely inferior. When I checked out the Quicken forums to find out where it had been hidden, my worst fears were confirmed about its removal. There was discussion about Quicken attempting to simply the product, but I don't understand why they have to remove features for the savvy user. My fear is that this feature is gone for good and I will be stuck with Quicken 2010 until they no longer support it! Not sure it is worth the trouble

Some things have improved with Quicken 2011, some things seem not to work as well as previous versions and things quicken can't couldn't do in the past it still can't do.Negatives (after a couple of days):1) If you trade options or anything but the most mundane investment products, forget about tracking them in Quicken. Prior versions couldn't do it and 2011 can't either. I dont' even bother to download invesmtent transactions anymore. It's easier to track them in excel. At least I can download option quotes in excel. Forget it in quicken.2) Downloading credit card / bank transactions has become more cumbersome with each new version of quicken. It's almost to the point where it just isn't worth it anymore. A major issue for me is an almost complete inability of quicken to correctly match downloaded transactions. Even though I have no transactions that need to be matched, quicken just arbitrarily (seems that way anyway) picks old transactions to... 2/5 spinningwood - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) When Will Intuit Learn?

1/5 Greg (Seattle WA) - See all my reviews This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe and State 2014 (CD-ROM) Once again the bean counters at Intuit have found a way to squeeze blood out of a turnip by downgrading a product, thinking no one will notice, and charging the same price for an inferior product. This 2014 version of Turbotax has fewer feature than previous versions, so it seems more like a bait and switch marketing ploy. I would think Intuit could create one or possibly two versions of Turbotax for sale, and still make the same profit. As an aside, Intuit has followed this same "less for more money" approach with its Quicken for Mac 2015 software, releasing a far inferior product than 2007 Quicken and then assuming Mac users would be forever grateful to Intuit for screwing them over. Is a 3 legged horse better than a two legged one?

I was part of the beta testing team for this product and, in my opinion, it was released way too soon. It has lots of bugs plus it has less features and a lot of differences from the Quicken Windows version which most people are used to and expect to find on the Mac version. I think Intuit released it early because so many people have asked for a product for Mac, but that's no excuse to release it before it's ready. Perhaps, some may say it's better than no Quicken for Mac as it's at least better than Essentials. That's like saying a three legged horse is better than a two legged one. My recommendation is that it's only going to get better, (because it can't get much worse). If you're already using Quicken on a Windows computer or have something else that works for you, I wouldn't purchase it. Wait about a year and I predict it will be much improved. What really stinks for the beta testers is that we set up our accounts on the beta version and was never told that the... 1/5 Chicago Gal - See all my reviews This review is from: Quicken For Mac Personal Finance & Budgeting Software 2015 [Old Version] (Software Download) I was part of the beta testing team for this product and, in my opinion, it was released way too soon. Beyond a joke: incompatible, feature-poor Quicken For Mac 2015 insults Mac users (23Jun2015 update)

Eight long years after its last real update of Quicken for Mac (version 2007 in August 2006), and some four years after release of its "Quicken Essentials for Mac" downgrade, Intuit finally released a "new" personal finance software product for Mac.Is it, at last, the cross-platformed Quicken, compatible with *any* Quicken for Windows version, that Mac users have been telling Intuit we needed for 26 years, since the first "Quicken for Mac" in 1989? No.Is there even a free download trial version of it, as there is with the far more capable, better supported, and cheaper full-featured personal finance software for Mac, iBank 5+, Moneydance and SEE Finance? No.If you want to try Quicken for Mac 2015, you have to fork out up to $80-plus (more than competitors) to discover a software product that, just like "Quicken Essentials for Mac", yet again lacks many essential features even of obsolete Quicken for Mac 2007, let... 1/5 Quicken says:, September 9, 2014

Top Ten Worst Software Releases of All Time

I hate it when a software company I've trusted for years puts out a product so awful, buggy and incompetent that it makes me forget why I ever trusted them in the first place. This version of Quicken was dead on arrival and cost me four hours of my life I'll never get back.Let's start with converting data from Windows. You know how you can use Word documents on either a Windows or Mac and the back-and-forth is seamless? Imagine the opposite of that. Are you imagining that? It's worse. It starts when you are installing Quicken. You are installing it on a Mac, because it's Quicken for *Mac*. Part of the install is to download the Converter. You click the link and the converter downloads. You are then told that the converter only runs on a Windows machine. So you have to transfer the file (or re-download it) on a Windows computer, which for me was at my office where I previously kept all my Quicken files. So I had to wait till Monday when I went to work to run the converter... 1/5 Grant A Thompson (Australia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Quicken For Mac Personal Finance & Budgeting Software 2015 [Old Version] (Software Download) Eight long years after its last real update of Quicken for Mac (version 2007 in August 2006), and some four years after release of its "Quicken Essentials for Mac" downgrade, Intuit finally released a "new" personal finance software product for Mac.Is it, at last, the cross-platformed Quicken, compatible with *any* Quicken for Windows version, that Mac users have been telling Intuit we needed for 26 years, since the first "Quicken for Mac" in 1989?
