Surface and Windows failures pit users against Microsoft's Ballmer

  • Boy, was I taken for a ride,” says one longtime Windows fan who learned too late that Windows 8 turned out not to be the product he thought he was pushing on people, and is now so frustrated he says he’s moving to Linux. “This mess is probably the most fractured that the Windows PC world has been for many years and it may never recover from it,” says another PC fan frustrated by the Windows 8 changes. Some Windows fans are still defending Ballmer and Microsoft, pointing to the fact that Windows 8 has sold a hundred million copies thus far even in the face of increasing competition from tablets. But others are cautioning that sales aren’t the same thing as satisfied customers, as the bulk of Windows sales are preinstalled on PCs, with users upgrading to Windows 8 by default simply because they’ve bought new hardware. It turns out he already grew tired of Ballmer’s vision for the Windows platform a few years ago: “I dropped Windows on the desktop when Vista came out and never looked back. And while Steve Ballmer has been embraced or at least tolerated by Microsoft’s customers for the bulk of his thirteen year tenure after taking over the CEO position from Bill Gates, Ballmer now finds himself the target of intense scrutiny from...

Scanning discs with antivirus DVD CD long - faster way?

I am wanting to scan some discs CD/DVD but the last time I tried it took a long time. 1.5 hours and it was still going. Is there a faster way that's both safe and reliable?

Use GNU/Linux or BSD, is not bulletproof, is better than the simply sloppy algorythms of paid softwares that are just blobs on blobs of poorley written code that a user is not allowed to or permitted to make work, better. And that is the flaw with Propietary Systems. I have personally had the GNU Kernel running for 12 years, yes I have updated it, it has never crashed or been infected, ever. I also have a freeBSD kernel running, 9 years, never infected, never crashed. Had a couple of Kernel Panics, a reboot later, all fixed. A faster way is to use a cleaner Base OS. /part that HDD use a slice for a free and not monolithic kernel or OS that is designed to operate, better. Is safe and reliabe and it simply works, and that us what you are asking.

I am concerned about my teenage computer geek?

she seems that she is hiding something from me. Every time I go near her she close the window or move her desk and her computer the other way. she never gives me any of her passwords and her laptop is password protected and she never let anyone to use her laptop. I am concerned about her safety. When she is not at home, I randomly check her history but didn't find anything. I am afraid to put any spy software on her computer, because if she finds out.... is there anyway that I could find out about her activities online?

I'm sorry you feel that way! You could do something similar to this http://www.groovypost.com/howto/free-par ental-control-net-monitoring-netgear/ so you can monitor her browsing history at the routing level. There is also plenty of software you can install on her computer that will log what she is doing but make sure you delete the evidence of you actually doing it (make sure you delete the history entries that show you going to said website and downloading the software). Also don't "ask to use her computer" that will be suspicious do it when shes not there and then setup everything exactly how she left it (take pictures if you have to) don't just set it there and forget to plug the laptop back into the power source that's a big giveaway. She may or may not notice you having actually done this. Also you could install a software key-logger that logs any keystrokes she types in so if you don't know her email password etc. install a key-logger (antivirus may raise flags though so use a test machine with the same antivirus as hers before installing it) then you will find out her passwords and you can use that to access her accounts and read through her emails etc. Also if she has any sort of logging setup she might notice the install (AIDE, Integrit, Tripwire logcheck swatch logsentry) and if she uses a VPN the router won't be able to log her traffic. Also if she uses Linux/BSD/Another Free Unix OS I'm not sure what to tell you I know that most "parenting software" is only supported on Microsoft Windows and Apples Mac OSX.

About this book
In the world of Unix operating systems, the various BSDs come with a long heritage of high-quality software and well-designed solutions, making them a favorite OS of a wide range of users. Among budget-minded users who adopted BSD early on to developers of some of today's largest Internet sites, the popularity of BSD systems continues to grow. If you use the BSD operating system, then you know that the secret of its success is not just in its price tag: practical, reliable, extraordinarily stable and flexible, BSD also offers plenty of fertile ground for creative, time-saving tweaks and tricks, and yes, even the chance to have some fun. "Fun?" you ask. Perhaps "fun" wasn't covered in the manual that taught you to install BSD and administer it effectively. But BSD Hacks, the latest in O'Reilly's popular Hacks series, offers a unique set of practical tips, tricks, tools--and even fun--for administrators and power users of BSD systems. BSD Hacks takes a creative approach to saving time and getting more done, with fewer resources. You'll take advantage of the tools and concepts that make the world's top Unix users more productive. Rather than spending hours with a dry technical document learning what switches go with a command, you'll learn concrete, practical uses for that command. The book begins with hacks to customize the user environment. You'll learn how to be more productive in the command line, timesaving tips for setting user-defaults, how to automate long commands, and save long sessions for later review. Other hacks in the book are grouped in the following areas:Customizing the User Environment Dealing with Files and Filesystems The Boot and Login Environments Backing Up Networking Hacks Securing the System Going Beyond the Basics Keeping Up-to-Date Grokking BSD If you want more than your average BSD user--you want to explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, create useful tools, and come up with fun things to try on your own--BSD Hacks is a must-have. This book will turn regular users into power users and system administrators into super system administrators.
